Free Group Hike

Sun, May 19, 2019 10:00 AM to Sun, May 19, 2019 3:30 PM

This is an adults only (19+) event!

Required Fitness Level
Very Active - For Very Fast/Experienced Hikers

This hike begins with an intense uphill grind along a dusty/sandy path, but eventually tapers off onto flatter land winding through the forest. Turn right just past the swamp around the 3.4 km mark to reach a spectacular view of West Kelowna overlooking Rose Valley and the lake at about 3.7 km. After reaching the summit at the weather station (8 km), this particular trail quickly necks out to a lookout over Blue Grouse and Terrace Mountain. Roughly 1.4 km past the weather station, cut immediately left through the forest for 60 meters to join up with a small dirt bike/hiking trail. Meander left on this trail down to Hayman Lake. From there, continue forward around the edge of Hayman Lake. Do not take the right-turn away from Hayman as it will loop back up to the weather station.

Unlike some, this trail is not clearly labelled and is marked by usage rather than signs, there are several trails you could end up on, so be sure you know which path you are planning to take beforehand. Be prepared to cross bridges, creeks and a variety of terrain. The trails were subject to wildfires in 2009 and thus the trail is still recovering in some sections. We highly recommend bringing our GPS trail maps.

During spring, a tiny waterfall opens up at about 4 km into the trail, snow can still be found in the area at this time so if you wish to trek up to it, bring footwear with good grip. Do not attempt this hike prior to mid-April as you are likely to get snowed in due to the elevation!

McDougall Rim is home to several types of wildflower in the summertime such as the Indian Paintbrush and Prairie Roses, it is also habituated by an assortment of wildlife including bears, deer, coyote and other larger animals which have been spotted in the area.

IMPORTANT: Hayman Lake is privately owned. Parcel ID 011-370-475. Please consult the ParcelMap BC to find a route around it, or contact the property owners for permission. The owners (as of May, 30 2019) are:

  • Hi. Will this be 18.7km? Sorry for the silly question. I'm new to the website but not new to trail hiking/running/climbing so very much interested! Thanks!

  • Not a silly question, Yumi. 18.7 is what the metrics indicate, which is the best information I have available to me. :)

  • What's the pace for the first intense part? And I heard there are rattle snakes? Sorry I'm new to town.

    Thu, May 16, 2019 11:04 PM
  • I'm assuming it's going to be a super fast pace and really excited about that! Most of the group hikes I have seen are too slow but this one caught my attention - "very fast/experienced"!! It will never take 5 hours!
Since I live in West Kelowna coming from the other side, I will meet everyone at the trail head at 10:00. Looking forward to meeting everyone!
