Tuktakamin Mountain
Tuktakamin Mountain
Falkland
Rarely frequented mountain summit with panoramic vistas.
Embark on an unforgettable adventure at the magnificent Tuktakamin Mountain, a towering gem nestled on the vibrant ridge overlooking the enchanting Salmon River Valley near Falkland, BC. This thrilling hike unveils awe-inspiring panoramas of the valley as you ascend a challenging incline that leads to a series of cell towers and picnic tables perched proudly atop the mountain's majestic peak.
Immerse yourself in nature's grandeur as the hike meanders in a captivating loop around a picturesque ridgeline. Begin your journey at the south trailhead, located in a recently deforested area that offers ample parking space (unlike the north trailhead, which has limited parking availability). A short jaunt along the logging road will unveil the path, which is clearly marked with a large trail sign. Be mindful that the deadfall might make it slightly challenging to locate the trail at points — keep an ever watchful eye out for trail flags and markers.
Test your mettle on sections of the trail that dare you to conquer steep slopes, pushing the limits with gradients nearing an exhilarating 18%. Over the course of 2.4 kilometers to the summit, you'll gain approximately 434 meters. On your descent, the trail unfolds on the northern side of the ridge, beckoning you homeward. The quality of the trail quickly declines and becomes increasingly challenging to follow. Bringing GPS is a must, but do not miss the stellar viewpoints (which are better than the summit) at 50.456978, -119.586479. Eventually, you'll reconnect with a dirt road which leads back the south trailhead!
